Where mind is located
The Emperor of China was very upset, though he won countless battles. Thoughts, rising in his mind were causing countless waves in him. His soul was restless from within. The more battles he won, the more restless be became.
When his kingdom was small, he was anxious to enlarge it. Then as the empire expanded, he needed more people to take control over the larger kingdom. The responsibility of securing the state from many enemies from neighboring states was also there. As his power increased, so were his enemies. The increasing power gave rise to countless lusts. He enjoyed wealth, power, prestige, women, but could not find peace. He lost tranquility of mind.
At the same time Bodhidharma, a great saint of India, reached China. He taught countless people, how to attain God. Gradually, his fame started spreading all around. This news also reached the emperor. He heard that Bodhidharma, a great saint of India, has come to China and has established peace in the minds of many people. The emperor also reached Bodhidharma. The emperor said from Bodhidharma, Swami my mind is very upset. Even after winning so many states, the mind is disturbed. I have a lot of wealth today. I have all the means of comfort in the world. All kinds of women are presented to me. But as much wealth is there, as there is unrest. Clouds of fear are hovering in the mind. Give a solution to calm it down.
Bodhidharma said, okay. I can calm your mind. But there is a condition for this. You have to come to me tomorrow morning at four o’clock. But remember, there should be no one with you. Just you have to come alone. The emperor kept turning all night in uneasiness. He could not sleep overnight. When the emperor reached at four o’clock in the morning, he saw that Bodhidharma had a stick in his hand. The emperor was surprised. What is the use of this stick? In spite of all the questions coming to his mind, he did not utter anything. He was eager to hear words of Bodhidharma.
Bodhidharma asked the emperor: Is your mind bothering you even today?
The Emperor said: Yes O revered Saint, my mind is still troubled today.
Bodhidharma said: O.K. just find it, where is your mind? If found, tell. I will calm down now with this stick.
The emperor was confused. He could not understand, where is he to find his mind? In the end, he started trying to look for his mind blindly. The more he tried to explore the mind, the thoughts would disappear. Gradually, he reached a state of thoughtlessness. When he opened his eyes, his mind was calm.
Bodhidharma told the emperor: Whenever you are disturb by your mind, just start witnessing it. Just try to understand , from where the series of thoughts have come from. The flow of thoughts will stop automatically. The emperor had received an answer. He got the key to control his mind. He was established in tranquil state. After bowing down to Bodhidharma, he returned happily.
